Achievement Night - The 4-H Achievement Night Program is a highlight of the 4-H year. It includes dinner and a program. County medals and awards are presented to 4-H members who have done outstanding work in the various 4-H project areas. Awards are also made for outstanding leadership and achievement, and for club recognition. 4-H members, parents and friends are invited to attend Achievement Night, held in the fall (usually during National 4-H Week).

 

4-H Ambassadors - Youth ages 13-19, and adult volunteers may apply to serve as 4-H Ambassadors on the Fairfax County 4-H Ambassador/Expansion Team. The purpose of the 4-H Ambassador/Expansion Program is to promote and foster the development of strong, new 4-H community clubs within targeted areas of Fairfax County. Ambassadors receive leadership development and communications skills training in addition to training necessary to represent the 4-H Program. District and State Ambassador opportunities are also available to promote 4-H with the public, legislative officials and to support local 4-H Club leaders. Applications are available from the Extension Office.

 

4-H Camp - All 4-H'ers have the opportunity to attend 4-H camp at the Northern VA 4-H Educational Center during the summer. Junior 4-H'ers 9-13, can attend the Fairfax/Alexandria/Arlington Camp in July as campers. Senior 4-H'ers, 14-19, serve as counselors. Camp activities include swimming, crafts, athletics, classes and campfire programs. Applications are available in the spring. Other District 4-H Camps are conducted throughout the year for special age or interest groups, such as Ski Camp, Teen Camp, Cloverbud Camp, Jr. High Camp, Science Camp, Horse Camp, and Creative and Performing Arts Camp at the Northern Virginia 4-H Educational Center.

 

4-H Camp Counselors - Youth, ages 14-19, may apply to serve as Camp Counselors at the Fairfax/Alexandria/Arlington 4-H Camp in July. Applications are due in February, and counselors attend three monthly leadership training sessions April-July. Senior 4-H'ers are also needed to serve as Camp Counselors at certain District 4-H Camps. Applications are available in the Spring.

 

Citizenship Washington Focus - Teen 4-H'ers have the opportunity each summer to be part of the Virginia delegation to National 4-h Citizenship/Washington Focus in Washington D.C. They spend an exciting week at the National 4-H Center with fellow teens from all over the nation, learning how our democracy functions. Tours, luncheons and other fun events add sparkle to the week. The delegates are encouraged to bring their training in citizenship back to the County.

 

County 4-H Association - The Fairfax County 4-H Association provides guidance, direction and support to the overall County Extension 4-H Youth Program and is comprised of approximately 15 adults and teens. The Association makes an effort to expand and review 4-H membership, participates in planning, development and evaluation of programs and identifies resources for the County 4-H program. The 4-H Ambassador/Expansion Team works under the auspices of the 4-H Association. The Association meets bimonthly on the first Monday evening.

 

4-H County Council - The 4-H County Council develops and approves the County 4-H Annual Plan, coordinates all County 4-H events and promotes enhanced communications between 4-H Clubs and the County. The Council is composed of the President and Delegate from all 4-H clubs (2 voting representatives). The Council meets bimonthly on the first Monday evening.

 

4-H County Contest Day - Includes Public Speaking, Presentations, and Fashion Revue. Members aged 14-19 may compete at State and National levels.

 

Fair Board - Plans and conducts annual County 4-H Fair; composed of officers and department superintendents and advisors and meets the fourth Tuesday quarterly, beginning in September.

 

4-H Judging Program - Judging contests are organized for Junior and Senior 4-H teams in the District and State in the areas of consumerama, dairy, forestry, livestock, land appreciation (soils), horse, meats, poultry and egg grading. Judging provides an opportunity for teaching standards and decision-making. All judging teams have three to four members except egg grading, which has two members.

 

National 4-H Week - The first week in October is a big week for Fairfax 4-H'ers as they join 4-H members and leaders all over the country to show the world what 4-H does. Displays, demonstrations, and other exhibits by individual clubs and counties, all call attention to the 4-H program.

 

Share-the-Fun - A countywide 4-H talent show. Members may compete at District level, members aged 14-19 may compete at State and National levels.

 

State 4-H Congress - State 4-H Congress is held in June at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia. State contests, classes, assembly programs, elections, fun and fellowship with 4-H'ers from all over the state are highlights of Congress. Delegates to the Congress are 4-H members aged 14-19.

 

Toastmasters - Public speaking workshops available to 4-H youth.
